1 Market Place

A grand place for a nightclub...
Decaying grandeur in need of some TLC

The Nottinghamshire Banking Co. was established in 1834 with a capital of £500,000 - Over £35 million today

Brief History

1 Market Place is Grade II listed. It was built in 1908 for the Nottinghamshire Bank to a design by architects Vallance & Westwick.

Current Condition

The construction is in ashlar with a granite plinth and doorcase, rusticated ground floor, double order pilasters, slate mansard roof and timber sash windows and dormers. It has a copper-covered corner dome. A striking corner building, vacant at present, unfortunately deteriorating and in need of refurbishment. Window coverings at street level detract from its appearance.

Suggested Works

Repairs to box gutters and stone cleaning. One first floor window where a vent is located is missing or has been altered.

Current Tenant/Owner

Vacant tenancy.

Comments about this page

  • I used to live in the flat about the old Westminster Bank at 1 Market Place. from 1969 to 1973. Accessed via Halford Chambers. If possible I would love to go up the approx 65 steps to see our old flat again. The impressive green dome on the corner was a storeroom in the flat. My husband painted cartoon characters around the walls. I would love to see if they are still there.
