Remembering Mr Splash

Mr Splash, a character from our childhood

In the 90s, my Mum would always take us to see Mr Splash while we were in town.

He would cycle into town in all his clown regalia and set up in one of the main streets. We’d throw some change into his charity bucket and he’d give us a small lollipop. It was only a tiny bit of coloured sugar at the end of a stick, but we loved it.

I would plead with my Mum to take us to see him whenever we saw his colourful outfit sat in the distance. He was always so friendly, I felt sure he remembered me each time (although loads of other children probably felt the same).

It’s only been as an adult that I’ve come to realise just how beloved by everyone he was. A figure of Mansfield’s local history.
