Brief History
24 Market Place is a Grade II listed former Moot Hall (meeting or assembly building) dating from 1752 and commissioned by Lady Oxford of Welbeck.
Current Condition
The windows and ground floor were remodelled in the mid- and late 20th century. Construction is in ashlar stone with a timber shopfront and coursed stone above and a Welsh slate roof. It is a striking building in good condition with an imposing coat of arms in tympanum. It has had recent works at high-level including netting the pediment to discourage birds.
A tympanum is the vertical recessed, decorated feature you can see in the centre of the pediment on the photo.
A pediment is a triangular feature on the roofline at the front of a classical building, typically on top of a portico.
A portico is a structure typically attached as a porch to a building, consisting of a roof supported by columns at regular intervals.
